Five Mailchimp KPIs selected to track email marketing output, audience health, and content effectiveness, with the selection criteria made explicit.

5 available indicators

Indicator Object Type Formula Unit
Campaigns Sent Number of campaigns sent in the period. Campaigns Leading COUNT count
Average Click Rate Average click rate across sent campaigns. Campaigns Lagging AVG(report_summary.click_rate) %
Average Open Rate Average open rate across sent campaigns. Campaigns Lagging AVG(report_summary.open_rate) %
Unsubscribe Rate Average unsubscribe rate across sent campaigns. Campaigns Lagging AVG(report_summary.unsubscribe_rate) %
List Growth Rate Net subscriber acquisition rate for the audience. Lists Lagging AVG(stats.avg_sub_rate) %

Mailchimp exposes several object types: campaigns, campaign reports, lists and their members, automations, templates, and landing pages. This integration focuses on two objects: campaigns, which are the primary unit of marketing execution, and lists, which represent the audience asset being built and maintained. Automations and landing pages were excluded because the activity they generate is not reliably attributable to an individual operator. Five KPIs were retained against three criteria: ability to attribute to an owner, resistance to gaming, and balance between leading and lagging indicators.

Campaign output and content effectiveness

Four KPIs are drawn from campaign data. Campaigns Sent counts the number of campaigns dispatched in a given period. Average Click Rate and Average Open Rate measure recipient engagement across those campaigns. Unsubscribe Rate measures the proportion of recipients who opt out after each send.

Volume and engagement

Campaigns Sent is the only leading indicator in the campaign block. It measures marketing cadence and the discipline with which the operator builds audience touchpoints. Taken in isolation it is insufficient: a high send count with poor engagement reveals frequency without quality. Reading Campaigns Sent alongside Average Click Rate identifies whether increased output translates into increased behavioral response, or whether it merely consumes list attention without return. Average Open Rate provides a secondary engagement signal. Since September 2021, Apple Mail Privacy Protection pre-fetches email images, causing open events to be recorded regardless of actual human opens on Apple devices. This systematically inflates open rates and makes trend comparisons across audiences with different device compositions unreliable. For this reason, Average Click Rate carries greater evidential weight when the two indicators diverge.

Frequency discipline and list health

Unsubscribe Rate is the primary counter-indicator to Campaigns Sent. When send frequency increases, a rising unsubscribe rate signals that the audience perceives the content as excessive or irrelevant. The combination of the two indicators identifies the boundary beyond which increased frequency destroys rather than builds engagement. A sustained Unsubscribe Rate above category benchmarks, even at stable send frequency, indicates a content relevance problem independent of cadence. Reading all four campaign indicators together — send volume, click rate, open rate, and unsubscribe rate — constitutes a complete view of campaign execution: output, engagement quality, and audience retention in a single frame.

Audience health as a long-term asset

List Growth Rate measures the net rate at which the audience expands: new subscribers acquired minus unsubscribes and cleaned addresses over the period. This indicator operates on a different timeframe and logic than the campaign KPIs. Campaign metrics reflect the quality of a single execution cycle; List Growth Rate reflects the compounding effect of the marketing program over time. A program can produce strong per-campaign engagement while losing ground on audience size, typically when acquisition channels underperform relative to natural churn. Conversely, rapid list growth with declining click and open rates may indicate that new subscribers are of lower quality than the historical base, which shifts the mix and suppresses average engagement. List Growth Rate sits at the account level and is not attributable to an individual operator in multi-user Mailchimp accounts; in single-operator configurations — which represent the majority of SMB deployments — it functions as an aggregate outcome measure for the marketing function.

Scope and limits of the integration

Mailchimp does not expose a native user identifier on campaign objects. Attribution relies on the reply-to email address configured in each campaign's settings, which serves as a proxy for the operator who created and sent the campaign. In accounts managed by a single person, this proxy is functionally equivalent to direct attribution. In accounts with multiple users sharing a common reply-to address, or where the reply-to is set to a team alias, individual attribution becomes unreliable and these KPIs should be interpreted at the account or team level rather than per operator.

None of these indicators measure the downstream commercial impact of email marketing. A campaign may generate high click rates leading to no conversions, or modest click rates leading to significant revenue, depending on landing page quality, offer timing, and sales follow-up. Revenue attribution requires the Mailchimp e-commerce integration to be configured with a connected store, a condition that is not universal and was excluded from this integration on that basis. The reliability of all five KPIs depends on consistent campaign management practice: campaigns sent without the correct reply-to address, or lists that accumulate invalid addresses without regular cleaning, will degrade the quality of every indicator in this block.
