Four Semrush KPIs selected to track SEO project health and link-building momentum, with the selection criteria made explicit.
| Indicator | Object | Type | Formula | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Site Health Score Latest site audit health score (0–100) for the project domain. | Project | Leading | LATEST(health_score) | score |
| Errors Fixed Number of site audit errors resolved between the previous and current crawl snapshot. | Project | Leading | COUNT | count |
| New Referring Domains Number of new referring domains acquired during the period. | Project | Leading | COUNT | count |
| Keywords in Top 10 Number of tracked keywords ranking in positions 1 to 10 in search results. | Project | Lagging | COUNT | count |
Semrush organizes its data across four API families: SEO analytics covering domain and keyword metrics, Position Tracking for campaign-level ranking surveillance, Site Audit for technical crawl health, and Projects as the container that ties all of these together under a named domain. This integration focuses exclusively on the Projects API, which is the only surface in Semrush that carries an owner identifier. The SEO analytics and Trends endpoints expose rich external data — keyword positions, traffic estimates, competitor benchmarks — but none of it is attributed to any team member. Four KPIs were retained, selected against three criteria: ability to attribute to an owner, resistance to gaming, and balance between leading and lagging indicators.
Site Health Score reports the current technical condition of the project domain on a 0-to-100 scale, as computed by Semrush's crawl engine across errors, warnings, and notices. Errors Fixed counts the number of audit errors that disappeared between the previous crawl snapshot and the current one. These two indicators are designed to be read together, and their relationship is asymmetric: Site Health Score is a state, Errors Fixed is a flow. A stable Site Health Score around 90 with a low Errors Fixed count may indicate a well-maintained domain requiring only routine attention. A rising Site Health Score combined with a high Errors Fixed count signals active remediation work. The reverse pattern — a declining Site Health Score despite a positive Errors Fixed count — suggests new errors are being introduced faster than they are being resolved, a sign of technical debt accumulation.
Errors Fixed is the most directly attributable KPI in this integration. Each resolved error corresponds to a discrete, verifiable technical action: a broken link corrected, a missing meta tag added, a redirect chain resolved. This makes it relatively resistant to gaming compared to ranking or traffic indicators, where external factors dominate. The pairing with Site Health Score prevents a narrow optimization strategy: an SEO manager could inflate Errors Fixed by introducing and immediately correcting trivial issues, but this would not move the aggregate health score.
New Referring Domains counts the number of distinct root domains that began linking to the project domain during the period. Keywords in Top 10 counts tracked keywords that hold a search engine position between one and ten at the end of the period. These two indicators occupy different positions in the SEO value chain. New Referring Domains is a leading indicator: a link-building campaign produces new referring domains before it produces ranking improvements, because Google's algorithm processes new backlinks with a delay that may span several weeks. Keywords in Top 10 is a lagging confirmation: it validates that earlier content and link-building investments have translated into durable ranking gains.
The tension between these two indicators is instructive in both directions. A high New Referring Domains count without any improvement in Keywords in Top 10 over multiple periods may indicate that acquired links come from low-authority or topically irrelevant domains — a quality problem that the volume count conceals. Conversely, a growing Keywords in Top 10 count with no new referring domains suggests the domain is gaining positions through content quality and technical improvements alone, which is a structurally fragile position: competitors with active link-building programs may eventually erode those gains. Neither indicator alone is sufficient to assess the health of an SEO strategy; the combination surfaces whether growth is being built on durable foundations.
Semrush measures the state of external systems — search engine indexes, competing domains, backlink graphs — not the internal work of individual team members. All four KPIs in this integration are attributed to the project owner, meaning the Human Bridge user designated as responsible for a given SEO domain. This is a deliberate simplification: in practice, multiple people typically contribute to SEO performance on a single project. The project-level attribution captures accountability, not exhaustive work attribution. A keyword ranking may improve because a developer fixed a Core Web Vitals issue, a content writer published a well-researched article, and a link-building specialist secured three editorial links — none of this granularity is visible in Semrush's data model.
Furthermore, organic ranking signals are influenced by factors entirely outside the team's control: algorithm updates, competitor content publishing, seasonal search demand shifts, and brand search volume changes driven by offline campaigns. A decline in Keywords in Top 10 during a Google core update carries a different interpretation than the same decline during a period of stability. The KPIs in this integration do not encode that context. They are most reliable as period-over-period trend signals rather than as absolute performance assessments. The reliability of these KPIs also depends directly on the discipline with which Position Tracking campaigns and Site Audit schedules are configured and maintained in Semrush: projects that are not regularly crawled or tracked will produce stale data.
